Angels

David Archuleta sang this song on American Idol this week (available on Itunes), and I really liked it, although it was a little difficult to understand some of the words. Well here are the words, from a song that apparently was originally sung by British pop superstar Robbie Williams.

I sit and wait
Does an angel contemplate my fate
And do they know
The places where we go
When we’re grey and old
‘cause I have been told
That salvation lets their wings unfold
So when I’m lying in my bed
Thoughts running through my head
And I feel that love is dead
I’m loving angels instead

And through it all she offers me protection
A lot of love and affection
Whether I’m right or wrong
And down the waterfall
Wherever it may take me
I know that life won’t break me
When I come to call she won’t forsake me
I’m loving angels instead

When I’m feeling weak
And my pain walks down a one way street
I look above
And I know I’ll always be blessed with love
And as the feeling grows
She breathes flesh to my bones
And when love is dead
I’m loving angels instead

And through it all
she offers me protection
A lot of love and affection
Whether I’m right or wrong
And down the waterfall
Wherever it may take me
I know that life won’t break me
When I come to call she won’t forsake me
I’m loving angels instead

And through it all
she offers me protection
A lot of love and affection
Whether I’m right or wrong
And down the waterfall
Wherever it may take me
I know that life won’t break me
When I come to call she won’t forsake me
I’m loving angels instead

Dominique

This was one of my favorite songs as a kid. As a kid I thought it was about a little French girl. Turns out years later, I found out that it was about St. Dominic, traveling and preaching over the land, and converting the "heretics" (les Albigeois or Albigensians, a whole historical matter in itself). I found the original artist, the Singing Nun or Soeur Sourire (Sister Sourire), on Itunes, but the version there by Soeur Marie is actually closer to the arrangement I remember and still love (and is the better one to download). The English translation below is not exact (for rhyming reasons I suppose), but it is quite close.

(Chorus)

Dominique mon bon Pere
garde-nous simples et gais
Pour annoncer a nos freres
la Vie et la Verite
(Chorus)

English -

Dominique, nique nique
o'er the land he plods along
and sings his little song
Never asking for reward
He just talks about the Lord
He just talks about the Lord

At a time when Johnny Lackland
over England was the King, Dominique
was in the backland,
fighting sin like anything

Dominique, nique nique
o'er the land he plods along
and sings his little song
Never asking for reward
He just talks about the Lord
He just talks about the Lord

Now a heretic, one day
Among the thorns forced him to crawl
Dominique with just one prayer,
Made him hear the good Lord's call
(To Chorus)

Without horse or fancy wagon,
He crossed Europe up and down
Poverty was his companion,
As he walked from town to town
(Chorus)

To bring back the straying liars
and the lost sheep to the fold
He brought forth the Preaching Friars,
Heaven's soldiers, brave and bold
(Chorus)

One day in the budding order,
There was nothing left to eat,
Suddenly two angels walked in
With a load of bread and meat
(Chorus)

Dominique once in his slumber
Saw the Virgin's coat unfurled
Over friars without number
Preaching all around the world
(Chorus)

Grant us now oh Dominique
The grace of love and simple mirth
That we all may help to quicken
Godly life and truth on earth
(Chorus)
